Obama Mocks Romney In Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon, Won't Comment On Gaza Ceasefire

Jokes about re-election.

WASHINGTON — Fresh off a four-day trip to Asia, President Barack Obama pardoned the National Thanksgiving Turkey Wednesday, taking a shot at his former Republican opponent and cracking jokes about his reelection.

"They say that life is all about second chances and this November I can't agree more," Obama said.

"So in the spirit of the season I have one more gift to give," Obama joked in apparent reference to Mitt Romney's claim after the election that Obama won by giving "gifts" to minority groups, Obama said he was going to pardon the National Thanksgiving Turkey, named Cobbler, and his stand-in, Gobbler.

“The American people have spoken, and these birds are moving forward," he added.

Adding that for the first time the Turkey selection was democratized by a Facebook poll, Obama quipped "and once again, Nate silver perfectly nailed it," a reference to polling analyst who predicted his win in 2008 and 2012.

Obama also recognized those still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy in the Northeast, as well as troops serving abroad away from their families during the holiday season. He then proceeded to make the sign of the cross over Cobbler's head, thereby making the "pardon" official.

After the photo-op, Obama refused to comment on a shouted question from a reporter about the ceasefire in Gaza, pausing while shaking hands to acknowledge the question, then smiling and turning away.

WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. Wednesday acknowledged he is cooperating with federal law enforcement officials investigating allegations of corruption that dogged the eight term congressman into retirement.

In a resignation letter to Speaker John Boehner, Jackson, who first came to Congress in 1995, said “I have made my share of mistakes. I am aware of the ongoing federal investigation into my activities and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigator and accept responsibility for my mistakes, for they are my mistakes and mine alone.”

“I pray I will be remembered for what I did right. It has been a profound honor to serve the constituents of Illinois Second Congressional District.”

Investigators have been looking into Jackson’s use of campaign funds, and local media reports have suggested Jackson may be trying to work out a plea deal with authorities.

Exclusive: NBC News Vetoed Chelsea Clinton Marriage Equality Ads

Videos prepared by former First Daughter, who supports marriage equality, would have been used in Washington state and by TheFour.com. But NBC News, where Clinton has worked for the past year, wouldn't allow it.

WASHINGTON — NBC News blocked backers of a key marriage equality measure in Washington State from using a video featuring Chelsea Clinton urging voters to support a state-wide referendum on gay marriage, BuzzFeed has learned.

Clinton, a vocal proponent of marriage equality, cut the video for a group supporting the Washington state measure, as well as a second video for another group. But NBC, for which Clinton works as a "special correspondent" since last November, "scuttled" the campaign, sources familiar with the ads said.

In the weeks before the November elections — where voters in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington voted on measures relating to same-sex couples’ marriage rights — such prominent support would have been heavily sought. Clinton had supported efforts toward the legislative passage of marriage equality in New York, going so far as to attend and participate in a phone-banking effort in Manhattan before the legislature approved the bill in June 2011.

Chelsea Clinton is thought by many in the Clinton circle to be eyeing a political future, and her public support for marriage was an early step in that direction. Her role at NBC News — where she focused on good-news stories, and avoids politics — also appears to be a step in the direction of public life.

Three people who saw the videos confirmed their existence to BuzzFeed. They were fully prepared, with the script approved in advance, one source said. The video wasn’t intended for TV broadcast, a second source said, suggesting they were instead to be used as web-based videos. The source added that multiple efforts had been intended beneficiaries of the former First Daughter’s support.

No one would confirm on the record who the intended beneficiaries were, but the sources said that Washington’s effort to approve Referendum 74 and the social media-based marriage equality effort, TheFour.com, would have been among the groups to have benefited.

In the video, a third source said that Clinton described her belief that everyone should have the freedom to marry, detailed the importance of the upcoming votes, and stated that success in the states voting on marriage would send a message to rest of the country.

In Washington, as well as the other three states, the efforts were successful nonetheless, with voters in Washington and Maryland approving marriage equality laws that had been put up to a referendum vote, voters in Maine approving a marriage equality initiative, and voters in Minnesota rejecting a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex couples from marrying.

Brian Ellner, one of the founders of TheFour.com, declared the effort that he had helped launch a success as well, telling BuzzFeed, "In the days leading up to the election, we reached over 4 million unique visitors and over 3.2 million potential voters in The Four states, including in top cities Baltimore, Seattle, and Minneapolis. On Election Day, we reached 2,237,203 people on Twitter alone."

A Clinton spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday, but The New York Post previously reported that Chelsea Clinton's NBC News contract was the reason why she was absent from the campaign trail in the 2012 election.

NBC did not respond immediately to an inquiry left Wednesday with its press office.

State Department: Morsi's Power Grab Raises "Concerns"

U.S. displeased, but keeps from applying too much pressure on Egyptian president.

Image by Maya Alleruzzo, File / AP

WASHINGTON — The State Department said Friday that Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's power-grab "concerns" the international community, but kept from applying too much pressure on the new leader.

In a statement sent to reporters a day after Morsi granted himself far-reaching powers, including immunity from judicial oversight, the State Department called for a new constitution with robust checks and balances. Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood allies have called his measures a temporary stop-gap until a new constitution is in place.

The State Department release takes care not to call Morsi out by name, after U.S. officials elevated Morsi by having him negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza earlier this week. He earned repeated praise from President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for his role in ending the fighting.

The full State Department statement is below:

The decisions and declarations announced on November 22 raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community. One of the aspirations of the revolution was to ensure that power would not be overly concentrated in the hands of any one person or institution. The current constitutional vacuum in Egypt can only be resolved by the adoption of a constitution that includes checks and balances, and respects fundamental freedoms, individual rights, and the rule of law consistent with Egypt's international commitments. We call for calm and encourage all parties to work together and call for all Egyptians to resolve their differences over these important issues peacefully and through democratic dialogue.

White House, State Department Silent On Uganda's Anti-Gay Bill

The Obama administration has expressed strong opposition to Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which has included the death penalty as a possible punishment, in the past. But neither the White House nor the State Department had comment Friday on the latest consideration of the bill.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama, in Myanmar on Nov. 19, 2012, have not yet commented on the latest introduction of a "draconian" anti-gay bill in Uganda.

Image by Carolyn Kaster / AP

The White House and State Department provided no comment on Friday on the most recent introduction in Uganda of a proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill that both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have harshly condemned in the past.

The speaker of the Ugandan parliament recently stated that she would ensure passage of the bill, which has included the death penalty as a possible punishment for homosexuality in certain circumstances and has not been passed other times it was considered after receiving significant international opposition.

“Ugandans want that law as a Christmas gift. They have asked for it and we’ll give them that gift,” parliament speaker Rebecca Kadaga told Reuters.

A State Department spokesperson said Friday that there was no statement at this time on the newest iteration of the legislation but that one could come in the coming week. The spokesperson did, however, reference the administration's earlier condemnation of the legislation.

In the past, Obama has spoken out against the bill, telling those assembled at the National Prayer Breakfast in February 2010, "We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are — whether it's here in the United States or, as [Secretary of State] Hillary [Clinton] mentioned, more extremely in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda."

In her International Human Rights Day remarks about LGBT rights in December 2011, Clinton stated, "It is violation of human rights when people are beaten or killed because of their sexual orientation, or because they do not conform to cultural norms about how men and women should look or behave. It is a violation of human rights when governments declare it illegal to be gay, or allow those who harm gay people to go unpunished."

According to the latest reports from Uganda, the bill has been considered by the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee and it has completed its report on the bill. The report has not yet been made public. Box Turtle Bulletin's Jim Burroway, who has tracked the bill's progress in Uganda for years, cautioned on Friday against believing reports that claim the death-penalty provision has been dropped from the legislation, as such claims have repeatedly been proven inaccurate in the past.

According to the advocacy group Sexual Minorities Uganda, the draft bill's provisions are "draconian." Among them, according to the group, are:

• "Any person alleged to be homosexual would be at risk of life imprisonment or in some circumstances the death penalty."

• "Any parent who does not denounce their lesbian daughter or gay son to the authorities would face fines of $2,650 or three years in prison."

• "Any teacher who does not report a lesbian or gay pupil to the authorities within 24 hours would face the same penalties."

• "And any landlord or landlady who happens to give housing to a suspected homosexual would risk 7 years of imprisonment."

Morgan Freeman Narrates LGBT Group's New Marriage Equality Ad

Of the November votes on gay couples' marriage rights, the Human Rights Campaign says in a new television ad that there is a “mandate for full equality.” The ad uses images of women's suffrage and Martin Luther King Jr.

Source: youtube.com

Invoking iconic imagery of women's suffrage and Martin Luther King Jr., the nation's largest LGBT group will begin airing a television ad on Sunday morning news shows highlighting this month's votes on marriage equality as momentum for further movement on the issue.

"Now, across our country, we're standing together for the right of gay and lesbian Americans to marry the person they love," narrator Morgan Freeman says in the ad. "And, with historic victories for marriage, we've delivered a mandate for full equality. The wind is at our back, but our journey has just begun."

The ad will be running throughout the coming week, Human Rights Campaign vice president Fred Sainz told BuzzFeed.

HRC president Chad Griffin said in a statement, "This year proved to be a pivotal turning point in the movement for marriage equality and now we press onward with renewed vigor and public opinion squarely on our side. As we continue the march toward full equality in legislatures and the courts, it is crystal clear that the prospect of an equal future is no longer up for debate; the question now is how soon it will arrive."

The ad comes as the Supreme Court is due on Nov. 30 to consider whether it will hear cases in the coming year addressing whether the Defense of Marriage Act or California's Proposition 8 are constitutional.

The strong push on the marriage front comes even as some others are pressing for HRC to highlight other issues, including workplace protections, in the wake of November's elections.

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would ban most private employers from discriminating against lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender employees, remains unlikely to pass in Congress due to the House Republican leadership's opposition. Advocates have pressed President Obama to take a first step and ban federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT people by executive order. Obama declined to do so in April, but advocates — including Griffin — have said that such an order is a key ask from the White House.

White House: Going Over The Fiscal Cliff Would Destroy Retailers

Obama raises the pressure on Congress in the holiday season. Consumer confidence at risk now, as much as $200 billion on the line next year.

Source: whitehouse.gov

WASHINGTON — With economists eyeing the holiday shopping season as a key indicator of the health of the American economy, the Obama administration estimated that congressional failure to act on the "fiscal cliff" would cut $200 billion off consumer spending in 2013.

The report from the National Economic Council and the Council of Economic Advisers released early Monday — "Cyber Monday" — is designed to increase pressure on Congress to reach an agreement on the looming spending and taxing issues, as well as raise public awareness of the upcoming decisions to the same end.

Failure to maintain lower tax rates for the middle class and failing to patch the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) could cut the slash of real consumer spending by 1.7 percentage points in 2013, according to the report. That change would result in a 1.4 percentage point cut in real GDP — the difference between steady growth and stagnation, or worse.

A more immediate fear is the impact of the negotiations on consumer confidence. The White House report highlights the sharp decline in sentiment during the debt-ceiling negotiations last summer, and a similar effect at this time of year could have brutal effects on the nation's retailers.

In the report, the White House repeats President Barack Obama's call for the immediate passage of middle class tax relief — which administration officials privately concede is a public relations ploy. Any congressional solution will almost surely require broader action to forestall the automatic spending cuts that were put in place when a "super committee" failed to reach bipartisan agreement on a range of budget issues.

Missouri Republicans Look To A Future After Todd Akin

$

Suggestions of a reformed primary system meet resistance. “I don't know that Todd Akin in one election cycle will change the direction of the Missouri Republican Party.”

Image by Charlie Riedel / AP

WASHINGTON — Most Missouri Republicans thought Todd Akin didn't have a chance.

The year was 2000, and Akin was one of five Republican candidates jockeying for the party's nomination in the second congressional district in Missouri, a safely Republican seat.

But Akin did win — by a mere 56 votes, with the help of his devoted, socially conservative following, and due in large part to low voter turnout on the day of the election, and because there was no runoff election.

This year, state Republicans were comparably stunned when Akin emerged victorious from a three-way Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. That history repeated itself was an indication of Republican primaries favoring the more extreme candidates, some within the party said — and Republicans around the country are studying Missouri closely as a case study in what not to do.

"As they say in politics, the middle of the road is where dashed lines and dead skunks are," said Franc Flotron, who lost to Akin in the 2000 Congressional primary race and now works as a lobbyist.

And in the 2012 election, it mattered: Akin was facing a moderate and competitive general-election opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill. The incumbent ultimately trounced Akin on Election Day, and now, Republicans in Missouri are wondering what they might learn from this traumatic election year, if anything, and how they might bounce back.

Even prior to an outcome in the Senate race, there was some talk — perhaps wishful — among Republicans who did not support Akin that the state's primary system should be reformed to include a run-off or a second-choice option. Such mechanisms might have prevented Akin from triumphing in the three-way competition with John Brunner, a businessman, and Sarah Steelman, a former state treasurer.

But one high-ranking state Republican said such a change would not be on the state's upcoming legislative agenda.

"I don't think the Akin race is going to have an effect on where the state has been going the past 10 years," the Republican said. "I don't think Missourians have changed."

"I don't know that Todd Akin in one election cycle will change the direction of the Missouri Republican Party."

The race has brought into prominent focus for Missouri Republicans what some people within the party see as a shortcoming in recruitment efforts, which has also played out among statewide office holders: The majority of Missouri's top offices, including the governorship, are currently held by Democrats.

The state GOP will likely have to grapple with its identity in much the same way national Republicans have said they intend to — and will face in particular the question of whether to elevate social or fiscal issues in the next election.

"There's always been a rift between social and fiscal conservatives, and this has really laid that bare," said one Missouri Republican operative. "Hopefully that heals."

Republicans Standing Firm On Taxes In Fiscal Cliff Talks

Still pushing for a deal “without job-killing small business tax hikes,” a GOP aide says. Discussions ongoing among staffers.

Image by Carolyn Kaster, File / AP

WASHINGTON — As lawmakers return Monday and resume talks on the fiscal cliff, Republicans are continuing to firmly oppose raising taxes to drive new revenue.

The question of new revenue is the chief sticking point as talks move forward to prevent $500 billion in spending cuts and tax increases from taking effect at the end of the year. Democrats have advocated letting a tax cut expire for the wealthiest 2% of Americans; meanwhile, Republicans have insisted that any revenue must come only from reforms to entitlement programs and by closing tax loopholes.

“The ‘fiscal cliff’ would hurt our economy and cost jobs," said one House Republican leadership aide. "Congressional and White House staff continue to work to find common ground that is consistent with the ‘balanced approach’ the White House says it wants — with significant spending cuts, and without job-killing small business tax hikes.”

Discussions are ongoing between White House and congressional staff, but another meeting between the president and leaders in Congress has not yet been scheduled, the aide said.
